Meet GLAAD. The charity working hard to lead the conversation, shape the media narrative around the LGBTQ+ community and accelerate acceptance. Founded over 30 years ago, GLAAD works to educate the media, tackle bias and strive for authentic representation. By sharing stories through entertainment, news, and digital media platforms they have been at the forefront of cultural change to ensure fair, accurate, and unbiased information is shared about the LQBTQ+ community.
‘GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBTQ+ acceptance. As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD protects all that has been accomplished and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love.’ – Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO & President of GLAAD
Throughout this year, Glow Hub are proud to support GLAAD by donating 20% of profits from our Charity Zit Zap Duo to help create a world where everyone can live the life they love.
So why is what GLAAD does important? What people see and hear in the media- think tv, social posts, adverts, movies, magazines – impacts their take on the world, and that doesn’t just affect them and their personal beliefs. Think about how much pop culture affects your life, from tv shows to newspaper headlines, it helps shape people’s beliefs and expands their understanding, creating thoughts (sometimes even subconsciously) that they then take throughout their own daily interactions. GLAAD believes the best coverage allows readers, viewers, and listeners to form their own conclusions based on factual information, compelling stories, and appropriate context.
On top of that, when you think about it, your friends, family, teachers, your boss– they are also the decision makers - in schools and universities, boardrooms, court rooms, newsrooms, in the workplace, in your government, in your homes and your lives. So, when everyone sees and hears members of the LGBTQ+ community accurately and authentically included in the media, they become better allies in making decisions that advance equality for everyone.
GLAAD’s most recent research actually shows a 20% increase in people identifying as LGBTQ+ with 1 in 6 members of Gen Z (ages 18-23) identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community. What that shows isn’t that more people are queer, but as society progresses, more and more people feel comfortable to be themselves, and isn’t that amazing?
