Best skincare ingredients for teens

by lily tickle |

Our skin goes through so many changes as we get older, especially when we hit our teens it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed with so many skincare ingredients and products being spoken about on social media. Good thing Glow Hub was created to make skincare easy to understand & FUN. So, let’s make it even easier & talk about some key skincare ingredients you should be using for your teen skin!

Oily Breakout prone
Looking to tackle breakouts? Keep an eye out for ingredients such as Salicylic acid, if you’re new to this ingredient introduce it to your skincare routine at a lower level - our Purify & Brighten is at a lower percentage & can be used daily to keep breakouts & blackheads at bay! Another fav spot fighting ingredient is tea tree, it’s antibacterial & time tested to help prevent breakouts & ease existing ones. We added+ Tea Tree into our Zit Zap Wand as an on-the-spot treatment & also our Under_Cover Concealer to conceal & treat at the same time!

Dry skin
Hyaluronic acid will be your best friend! It is deeply hydrating & plumping giving you the bounciest hydrated skin there is! Also, Polyglutamic Acid works in the same way as Hyaluronic Acid BUT holds 4x moisturiser, exactly why we paired both these Hydration Heroes together to make our iconic serum.
You can also find Hyaluronic Acid In our Nourish & Hydrate range which is super gentle for a skincare newbie.

Combination skin
With combination skin you will often get an oily T-zone and normal to dry cheeks, Hyaluronic Acid is a great ingredient to hydrate the areas that tend to be on the dry side but also hydrate and balance the oily areas of the skin, hydration is key to putting a stop to over production of oils!

Any ingredients to avoid for teen skin?
In your early teens (13-16) we would avoid using any high percentages of chemical exfoliants just yet! Your skin will already be baby soft & you’re most likely to cause more damage than good. A gentle BHA for breakouts like our Super Serum will be fine for teen or if you are noticing texture you can use a low level AHA serum, enter: Glow Giver.

The buzz around Retinol is hard to ignore but we promise you teen skin just doesn’t need retinol. Just like any chemical exfoliant it increases cell turnover, which is already quite fast in your teens as you are still growing & therefore you are more susceptible to a damaged moisture barrier (not good).

Don’t worry if you have damaged your skin barrier though! Introduce ingredients such as Fatty Acids & Ceramides into your routine, these can be found in Barrier Builder to help build up your skin’s moisture barrier & promote the healthiest of healthy skin!

We asked team Glow Hub if they had any skincare advise that they would give their teenage selves, here is what they said…

Lily: Not to avoid moisturiser! I think back to the time I would skip moisturiser as I was so worried I would make my skin oiler, instead I was just making my skin dehydrated & therefore producing more oil leading to more & more breakouts!

Amy: I would say the main advice I would give to my teen self, would be DO NOT PANIC when I have a flare up... I used to then over-use lots of different ingredients to try and clear my skin, when actually, you need to just strip back your routine and assess what the trigger is; it could be a key active or it could be your diet or hormonal. Learning about what suits ME (not copying influencers) has been the biggest factor in having clearer skin.

Scarlett: Follow a routine and don't try products or ingredients sporadically, keep it simple and streamline. Cleanser, toner, moisturiser.
