Building a skincare routine for teenage skin
by lily tickle |
We get asked ALL the time ‘is Glow Hub suitable for teenage skin’. The answer is YES! All our products are formulated with every skin type in mind (and they’re dermatologically tested), but it can be a struggle to know where to start as ‘teenage skin’ often gets lumped into one category. This is where we come in… Firstly, you need to know your skin type, this will help determine which products you should be using.
There are 4 skin types:
• Normal – You are neither oily nor dry, you have non or very few blemishes, and you don’t tend to experience any irritation.
• Combination – You will have an oily T-zone (forehead, down the nose & chin) and experience spots and blackheads in this area but have normal to dry skin on the cheeks.
• Oily – You will see oil produced all over the face, spots, and blackheads also. A great test for oily skin is to wash your face and wait an hour without applying any other products. If your face looks shiny you more than likely have oily or at least combination skin.
• Dry – You will often see flakey and cracking skin; it can feel tight and look dull. You may find your skin is more prone to irritation and redness.
There are so many external and environmental factors that can affect your skin such as hormones, weather, diet, stress the list goes on. The best thing to do is find what works for you, build a routine, and stick to it! So, let’s build some routines…
Keeping it simple: Normal skin
The best way to ensure you are taking care of a normal skin type is to keep it simple but effective. You don’t want to be using unnecessary products/ ingredients that may not work for your skin type! Any skin type can experience a damaged moisture barrier, to ensure the healthiest, glowiest and show-stopping skin there is, apply the Barrier Builder Serum after cleansing and before the rest of your routine.
Again, no matter the skin type you need to be using a moisturiser, but it can be difficult to find the one that is just right for you. We cannot recommend a gel moisturiser enough for normal skin types! The texture is just *chefs kiss* and sinks into the skin beautifully. Glow Hubs Nourish and Hydrate Gel Moisturiser Is formulated with hyaluronic acid for a drench of hydration.
This last one goes for ALL skin types – wear your SPF! It is so important to protect our skin against UVA and UVB rays, with Glow Hubs Defend Yourself SPF 30, not only will it protect your skin but it will also give an amazing glow, and, we cannot stress enough… won’t clog your pores!
Mix and match for Combination skin!
So, how am I meant to treat oily and dry/normal skin at the same time? That is the beauty of Glow Hub, all our core ranges are grouped by colour code. For combo skin our Purify & Brighten (purple) and Calm and Soothe (green) will be your best bet.
Start with our Purify & Brighten Jelly Cleanser. It will tackle oil without stripping the skin leading to dry patches outside of the T-zone (thank you glycerin).
Next up serum, if you are only seeing breakouts in the T-zone area we strongly recommend pressing Purify & Brighten Super Serum in this area ONLY! Targeted applications and treatments is definitely a combo skin top tip!
Everyone gets spots, this is why we love Zit Zap wand so much, a targeted treatment to tackle those breakouts exactly where you want to, without drying your skin out.
As a final step apply Calm and Soothe Cool Whip Moisturiser AM and PM. It it a lightweight moisturiser but sooo hydrating and cooling to apply onto the skin. It will help with any irritation and redness PLUS nourish the dryer areas of the face. It is formulated with hemp, jojoba and shea butter which won’t clog your pores and is AMAZING for irritation-prone skin!
Keeping oily skin under control
Oily skin can be daunting (Lily from Team Glow here - as someone with oily skin I feel your pain!) Often people find themselves stripping and damaging the skin with the false understanding that zero moisture = zero oil.
Instead, you want to use a cleanser that’s going to do a deep clean, without drying your skin out. The Glow Hub Purify and Brighten Jelly Cleanser has black tea and blueberries to detoxify and brighten, and glycerin to draw water into the skin and give an unbelievable glow. Cleanse for a full 60 seconds to break down spot causing sebum.
THE serum for oily skin, meet the Purify and Brighten Super Serum. Formulated with the iconic Purify and Brighten trio, blueberry, black tea and salicylic acid! This is going to help with visible blackheads, pores and oiliness.
Next up is an oily skin savior, our Purify and Brighten Pore Rescue Toning Pads. They are supercharged formula and only need to be applied 2-3 times a week. With salicylic acid as the key active ingredient, this is incredible for oily skin as itit'sil soluble which means it can get deep into those pores. Use these in the PM and do not layer any other chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA/ other salicylic acids) to avoid damaging your moisture barrier.
Lastly, moisturiser, something I’m sure everyone with oily skin has tried to avoid. When you try out our Purify and Brighten Moisture Lotion you won’t look back. It is formulated with a gentle exfoliator to de-clog and minimize blemishes and glycerin and shea butter to moisturise and brighten the skin.
Three steps to hydration
When you have dry skin, you need to be locking in hydration at every step in your routine. Begin with a gentle but hydrating cleanser such as our Nourish and Hydrate Cleansing Balm, the formula of this cleanser is just… wow. As you massage the cleanser into the skin it breaks down all traces of makeup, dirt and impurities and deeply nourishes the skin with peach, coconut water and hyaluronic acid.
There is a reason that Hydration Hero is called Hydration Hero. It contains hyaluronic and polyglutamic acid which is a dry-skin dream duo. As the serum sinks into the skin It will instantly quench the skin’s thirst and give an unbeatable glow
Maybe the most important step for dry skin types - moisturiser... we LOVE Nourish & Hydrate Gel Moisturiser. Lightweight with hyaluronic acid to hydrate and vitamin C to brighten. Best of both worlds.
