What are adaptogens and do they benefit your skin?

by Elise Parkes |

Adaptogens. One of the buzziest words in the wellness world and used in Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine for centuries. If you’re feeling stressed right now (who in the modern world isn’t?) – like us, adaptogens could be your next obsession.  But what are adaptogens and how do they benefit your skin?

What are adaptogens?
So, what actually are adaptogens and why do people love them so much? Well, in short, they’re plant based ingredients that are known to help the body adapt to stressors, regulating their responses. When it comes to skincare, they help protect the skin against environmental stressors (pollution, UV, oxidative stress), allowing the skin to ADAPT when triggered.

Types of Adaptogens
Are all plants adaptogens then? In short no. To classify as one these plants need to be-able to support the body in resisting stressors (physical, biological and chemical stress) without causing harm. Mushrooms are INCREDIBLE adaptogens – Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps (as found in our tri_shroom complex!) being some of the most potent. Resihi are known for their immune boosting properties and antioxidant rich Chaga and Cordyceps for their ability to help with signs of premature ageing. Ashwagandha is also an amazing adaptogen, helping to body to adapt to oxidative stressors and restore balance.

How Do Adaptogens Work?
Adaptogens work to protect skin against environmental pollutants and the physical stressors by blocking them from damaging the skin. Adaptogens help cells ‘return to base line’, fighting off damages or changes, influencing the inflammatory response, and restoring balance in the cells.

Benefits of Adaptogens for Skin
Although your skin does naturally resist aggressors - think regulating heat, preventing infection, protecting against water loss - adaptogens work to enhance and protect it further – possessing anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe redness and sensitivity, boost the skin barrier, brighten the complexion, reduce pigmentation and improve overall skin health.
